Senate ratifies legal assistance treaty with Malaysia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At the fourth plenary session of the Senate, the Law "On the Ratification of the Treaty between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Government of Malaysia on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters" (Tashkent, on 8 June 2023) was reviewed and approved.
The document outlines the grounds and conditions for providing legal assistance in criminal investigations and procedural actions. It specifies the form and content of requests, the procedure for their execution, the grounds for refusing legal assistance, and limitations on the use of obtained information and evidence.
A key aspect of the Treaty is cooperation in identifying and locating individuals. In particular, if the requesting party has sufficient grounds to believe that a sought individual is on the territory of another state, the receiving party is obligated to take all necessary measures to locate the person in accordance with its laws.
Senators believe that the ratification of the Treaty will enhance the efficiency of law enforcement agencies in both countries in investigating criminal cases and conducting judicial proceedings, as well as strengthen the legal mechanisms of bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Malaysia.
The Law was approved by the senators following the discussion.
