Senate introduces legislative amendments to prevent “Family voting”

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At a recent session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, the Law "On amendments and additions to certain legislative acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was approved.

The law aims to strengthen guarantees of equal voting rights for every citizen, prevent cases of "family voting," and ensure transparency in financial operations during electoral campaigns.

The law includes amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Code of Administrative Responsibility related to the electoral process. Specifically, it establishes penalties for violations regarding the issuance of voting ballots, with fines up to one basic calculated amount.

Additionally, the law introduces administrative responsibility for violations of financial reporting procedures concerning state funds allocated for elections. Violations such as failure to submit or timely submission of interim or final reports by political parties to the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan, or providing deliberately false information, will result in fines ranging from five to ten basic calculated amounts for officials.

Senators emphasized that the adoption of this law will further strengthen guarantees of equal voting rights for all citizens, improve the legal framework for providing accurate and timely information on the use of state funds during electoral campaigns, and enhance the accountability of political parties regarding the use of budgetary funds.

The law was unanimously approved by the senators, highlighting the importance of increasing legal responsibility and transparency in Uzbekistan’s electoral process.
