SCO Secretary General meets with UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 27 September 2019, the SCO Secretary General Vladimir Norov met with the UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenča in New York at the UN headquarters.

The SCO Secretary General emphasized that cooperation with the UN is a priority for the SCO in addressing the challenges of countering international terrorism, regional economic development and cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian sphere.

Norov expressed gratitude to Miroslav Jenča for the role of the UN Secretariat in adopting at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly a Resolution on cooperation between the two organizations, which opens up great opportunities for joint measures to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The Assistant Secretary-General praised the dynamics of the development of interaction between organizations and noted that one of the tasks of the UN, including in the context of its reform, is to deepen and expand cooperation with regional organizations. “The SCO is one of the UN’s priority partners in countering modern challenges and threats, and sustainable social and economic development,” Miroslav Jenča added.

The interlocutors discussed prospects for deepening the SCO’s interaction with the UN and its specialized agencies, including through joint events. The parties agreed to continue working contacts at all levels.

The UN Assistant Secretary General Miroslav Jenča is a career diplomat, held senior positions in the system of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, was the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia, and the Representative of the Slovak Republic to the Council on Political Affairs and Security of the European Union. Headed the OSCE Mission to Uzbekistan.

From 2008 to 2015, he was Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Head of the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia with an office in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan).
