Sports 02/05/2007 S. Korea to warm up for Asian Cup with match against Uzbekistan

South Korea’s national football team will have a friendly match with Uzbekistan in Seoul, Korea, in early July in preparation for the quadrennial Asian football tournament, the nation’s football governing body said Wednesday.

"We have decided to play two friendly matches to wrap up our preparations before the opening of the Asian Cup," Ko Seung-hwan, director of the international relations department in the Korea Football Association (KFA), told Yonhap News Agency. "Uzbekistan is one of two opponents, and the other has not been decided yet."

The match will likely take place at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium on July 2, although the exact schedule has yet to be confirmed, Ko added.

South Korea has three wins, one draw and one loss against Uzbekistan since the two first met in the Hiroshima Asian Games in 1994. South Korea beat the Central Asian team twice in their Olympic football preliminaries this year.

The KFA is authorized by its regulations to demand professional clubs release players to join the national team from June 23.

The nation’s football squad is in Group D along with Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in the round of 16 for the Asian Cup, which will be co-hosted by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

South Korea faces Saudi Arabia in their Asian Cup opener in Jakarta, Indonesia, on July 7.
