Russia Bans Import of Uzbek Peaches Over Dangerous Pest Detection
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) has banned the import of a 1.6-ton batch of fresh peaches from Uzbekistan after detecting a dangerous quarantine pest — the oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta).
According to the agency, the contaminated fruit was discovered on 25 June during a phytosanitary inspection at the Sirius temporary storage facility in the Kaliningrad region. Specialists identified the presence of the oriental fruit moth, which is listed among quarantine organisms posing a serious threat to agriculture.
In accordance with current regulations, the contaminated goods were denied release and sent for mandatory quarantine disinfection.
The oriental fruit moth is considered one of the most harmful pests of fruit crops. It damages fruits and young shoots, which can result in total crop loss. While the insect poses no danger to humans, its spread could cause significant harm to the agricultural sector.
