Race on for best AFC U-16 third-placed team
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Oman leads the way so far in the race to finish as best third-placed team and qualify for next year’s AFC U-16 Championship 2010 finals.

Oman have seven points from Group D but all that could change on Tuesday when the final matches from Group A are completed.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Uzbekistan all have a chance to qualify directly or as the best third-placed team from Group A.

The Uzbeks, with nine points, have already qualified either way.

The best third-placed team will only come from Groups A-G, three of which have five teams while the other four feature six teams.

The first criterion is number of points. However, for groups with six teams, the side finishing third will be deducted the points gained from their match against the bottom team.

As an example, Oman finished with 10 points in Group D but were deducted three points from their win over bottom side Turkmenistan. Therefore, they are on seven points in terms of best third-placed team calculations.

After points, goal difference is taken into consideration.

Groups A, B and E are the pools with five teams while Groups C, D, F and G are contested by six teams. Group H had three teams with only the winners - Australia - qualifying for the finals.

Standings so far

Group A: still playing

Group C: Yemen - 6 points (3 deducted for the win against Bhutan)
Group D: Oman - 7 Points (3 deducted for the win against Turkmenistan)
Group E: Chinese Taipei - 6 points
Group F: Hong Kong - 4 points (3 deducted for the win against Macau)
Group G: Thailand - 5 points (3 deducted for the win against Cambodia)
