Uzbekistan 08/10/2007 Putin praises "sometimes emotional" EURASEC summit talks

The EURASEC [Eurasian Economic Community] summit was held on Saturday in Dushanbe, where the leaders of the CIS have gathered these days. This organization brings together six countries: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Vesti news report by state-owned Russian television channel Rossiya reported on 6 October.

The meeting in the Somon Palace begun in a narrow format; the leaders were later joined by members of their delegations. During the talks, important issues regarding integration within the EURASEC were discussed, in particular, economic cooperation and customs regulation.

Vladimir Putin, Russian president, said the work in narrow format of the EURASEC was very constructive, focused, sometimes emotional, but always with the desire to find a solution. And regarding practically all the issues that we discussed, despite the significant differences at the beginning of the discussion, we reached a consensus decision, which we think meets the interests of all our states.

This applies primarily to economic integration and the possible creation of a customs union. This also applies to the energy sector, water resources, and personnel issues. The remarks of all our colleagues were not only discussed, but were also taken into consideration.

As a result of the meeting, some 200 documents were passed aimed at further developing the organization; some of them concern the creation of a customs union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
