President of Uzbekistan signs law on space activities

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 13 January 2025, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the "Law on Space Activities," aimed at developing the industry and regulating matters related to the use of space within the country.

According to the text of the document, the main principles of space activities are digitalization, transparency, international cooperation, and adherence to sanitary, environmental, and technical standards. The key goal will be to explore the territory of Uzbekistan for scientific, socio-economic, and commercial purposes, as well as for combating climate change.

The Agency for Space Research and Technologies (Uzbekcosmos) has been appointed as the responsible entity for carrying out tasks in the space sector. It will be responsible for selecting a national remote sensing operator who will collect, process, store, and provide data to government agencies and private individuals. The operator will also carry out space monitoring at the request of government structures.

The law regulates issues of safety and environmental control in space activities, including mandatory compensation for damages in the event of incidents during the launch of objects. Provisions are also made for conducting scientific research, using satellites for remote sensing, communication, and navigation, as well as the disposal of space objects.
