Powerful earthquake in Myanmar: Over 1,000 dead

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The death toll from Myanmar’s strongest earthquake has risen to 1,002, with another 2,376 people injured and around 30 reported missing, according to the State Administration Council (SAC) on Saturday.

Rescue operations are underway in the hardest-hit regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, northeastern Shan State, and the Naypyidaw capital district.

SAC leader Min Aung Hlaing has urged authorities to expedite aid efforts, emphasizing the urgent hospitalization of the wounded. He also ordered the immediate clearing of debris and the prioritization of public safety, ensuring access to drinking water, food supplies, and temporary shelters for affected communities.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday at 12:51 local time. The epicenter was located 20 km northeast of Mandalay (coordinates: 22.09°N, 96.23°E), with a hypocenter depth of 10 km.
