UWED hosts annual conference on Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 5 December 2022, at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), with the support of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a high-level conference was held on the topic: "Accession of Uzbekistan in the WTO: Challenges and Opportunities”.
The purpose of the event is to develop proposals for maximizing the benefits and minimizing the possible negative consequences of membership, studying the experience of joining the WTO, modeling the assessment of the impact of Uzbekistan’s accession to the Organization on the national economy and its legal system.
The conference was attended by First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, UWED Rector Sodik Safoev, Deputy Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Badriddin Abidov, WTO Deputy Director General Xiangchen Zhang, representatives of donor countries, government agencies, international experts, scientists and students.
UWED is one of 17 institutions selected to join the network of WTO Chairs in December 2021, which now includes 36 universities from around the world (“WTO Chairs Program”). The WTO Chair Program was launched in 2010. It aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the trading system among academics and policy makers in developing countries through the development of curricula and the expansion of research activities at universities and research institutes.
Opening the event, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, UWED Rector Sodik Safoev emphasized that the department created at UWED is the first of its kind in Central Asia and its activities will be aimed at expanding knowledge of the WTO legal system among scientists and practitioners through the development of curricula, conducting research and educational activities.
Deputy Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade Badriddin Abidov noted the importance of including the University of Uzbekistan in the WTO Department Program and the relevance of establishing contacts with the teaching staff of this program in the course of studying the assessment of the impact of the republic’s accession to the WTO on the national economy and its legal system. Also, the participants of the event were acquainted with the current state and tasks for further enhancing Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO.
WTO Deputy Director General Xiangchen Zhang highly appreciated the active and systematic work carried out by the Uzbek side in preparing and organizing the 5th meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO, and noted the current consistent steps to further advance the process of the republic’s accession to the Organization.
Following the results of the conference, the participants spoke in favor of active cooperation between representatives of state bodies, international organizations and scientific and educational institutions within the framework of the Program of WTO Chairs.
