Developing a region-wide approach to achieving gender-related SDGs

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Today Regional Conference on "Sustainable Development and Women’s Leadership in Central Asia" was held under the auspices of the Central Asia Women Leaders Caucus. The event was organized by the UN Development Program, UN Women, and the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia.
The conference aims to develop a Regional Action Plan on Sustainable Development, Gender Equality, and Women’s Leadership in Central Asia as well as to strengthen the leadership skills of young women parliamentarians and increase their participation in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Chairperson of the Central Asia Women Leaders Caucus Tanzila Narbaeva and other members of the Caucus, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, the Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Natalia Gherman, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia Alia El-Yassir, the UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Uzbekistan Yu Yu, the UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan Matilda Dimovska and others participated in the event. Participants included high-level UN representatives in Central Asia, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Asian Development Bank, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and foreign women ambassadors to Uzbekistan.
Separate sessions were devoted to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asian countries. The participants also considered the prospects for developing a regional approach to achieving the SDGs on gender issues within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Participants noted the importance of cooperation between women leaders of Central Asian countries in promoting gender equality, exchange of experience among them, especially in legislative bodies, as well as making collective efforts to promote the SDGs and studying best practices in the field of normative, parliamentary oversight and gender equality.
Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Chairperson of the Central Asia Women Leaders Caucus, noted that in Uzbekistan the implementation of the SDGs is carried out in close coordination with the reforms carried out under the National Action Strategy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The SDGs are integrated into the Concept of social and economic development of Uzbekistan until 2030. "Without the active involvement of all the countries of Central Asia, our work will not bring the expected results in terms of development and strengthening the comprehensive, practical cooperation and solidarity between the women of the region", T.Narbaeva stressed.
Mirjana Spoljarich Egger, Director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS countries noted that the common efforts are made taking into account that achieving the SDGs without the full inclusion of women in all aspects of society and the economy is impossible. "Empowering women is an accelerator to economic growth, prosperity, and stability. UNDP will further strengthen its focus on advancing women’s leadership in politics, governance, and the economy. It is only by eliminating all forms of gender inequalities and by empowering women, we will build peace, sustain our communities and step up progress towards the SDGs. The Caucus of women leaders of Central Asia is a co-partner of UNDP in these efforts and plays a tremendous role notably by creating space and opportunities for effective international and regional cooperation," M.Egger stressed.
UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan Matilda Dimovska noted that the world, CA countries needs women’s leadership and skills, talents, innovation, perspectives to solve its biggest challenges in all spheres – from tackling climate change to rebuilding economies and communities, thus attaining SDGs. "We will continue to draw on the superb talents of women of the region – including those present in this room – to keep making the difference," M. Dimovska emphasized.
The conference participants also discussed the issue of supporting promising women leaders in Central Asia to stimulate transformational changes to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as to promote gender equality through women’s leadership.
In the afternoon, UN Women experts conducted training sessions on effective communication for Central Asian women parliamentarians under the age of 40. These sessions were aimed at improving skills in the effective promotion of gender equality through different communication channels and developing communication strategies.
The discussions also focused on strategies and measures to strengthen regional cooperation, identifying priority areas for cooperation and partners to achieve common regional goals on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
A Regional Action Plan for Sustainable Development, Gender Equality, and Women’s Leadership in Central Asia will be developed based on the proposals and recommendations received as a result of the event.
