Tashkent hosts seminar on support of mass media

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Public fund on supporting and developing independent print media and information agencies of Uzbekistan in cooperation with parliamentary commission on management of resources of the Public fund on support of NGOs and other civil society institutes under the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a seminar “Guarantee of the state support of mass media – important conditions of gradual development of national information space” on 22 October 2013.
The event was aimed at discussing openness and transparency of the state bodies and informing public on course of testing the draft law “On openness of the activities of the state bodies and administration”, ensuring economic independence of mass media, etc.
MPs and journalists from various mass media participated at the seminar. Overall, the event attracted 70 people.
The participants considered issues related to procedures of informing population on activities of the state bodies, participation of state bodies and civil society institutes in supporting mass media, raising role of NGOs in increasing activities of media sphere representatives.
It was noted that Uzbekistan reforms legislation to create democratic framework for work of mass media and introduction of market mechanism, implements projects on strengthening material-technical base and introduction of ICT, as well as training journalists.
It was said that currently 1,360 mass media outlets are registered Uzbekistan, of which 62% are non-governmental media. It was underlined that NGOs are also actively participate in liberalization of the activities of mass media.
In particular, parliamentary commission on management of resources of the Public fund on support of NGOs and other civil society institutes under the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan directed 165 million soums to support mass media, of which 60 million were used to modernize and improve material-technical base, as well as cadre potential of regional mass media. Other 65 million soums were used to hold various events for journalists and 40 million soums to hold contests among mass media.
The seminar provided information on reforms in mass media sector in Uzbekistan, as well as testing of the draft law “On openness of the activities of the state bodies and administration”, which is conducted in Bukhara and Samarkand regions.
