OSCE Centre in Bishkek helps strengthen police, social services co-operation to prevent and combat domestic violence
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A roundtable discussion supported by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek for more than 60 local police officers, representatives of the state administration and social, educational and health institutions along with representatives of crisis centres for victims of domestic violence was held in Bishkek on 1 December.

The event was organized by non-governmental organization The Centre for Research of Democratic Processes and the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry, and was supported by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek in line with its project, "Kyrgyz Police in the Fight against Domestic Violence".

A documentary created by the organizers and the OSCE Centre to shed light on the problem of domestic violence "Once upon a time", was presented. The discussions focused on the role of each agency in addressing domestic violence and the need for enhanced interaction to increase efficiency and achieve a positive synergy.

Lilian Darii, the Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, said: "The OSCE Centre helps train police to handle cases of domestic violence. The OSCE Centre also emphasizes the importance of the involvement of other social agencies, because domestic violence is a social problem with wider implications and not just a matter for law enforcement. Consolidation of efforts by all relevant state and non-governmental agencies to effectively prevent and combat domestic violence is vital."

"Monitoring implementation of Kyrgyz law on social and legal protection in this area has shown that there is a lack of co-ordination and interaction between the relevant agencies. Therefore, this roundtable discussion is an important opportunity to increase their role and interaction," said Talaikul Isakunova, the Head of the Centre for Research of Democratic Processes.

The event will result in concrete proposals and a resolution on inter-agency co-operation between the police and other institutions.
