Sports 09/09/2009 Novak Djokovic to miss Davis Cup tie against Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- World No. 4 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will not play at the Davis Cup World Group play-off against Uzbekistan.

Serbia’s captain Bogdan Obradovic called Viktor Troicki (31st place in ATP ranking), Janko Tipsarevic (64), Iljja Bozoljac (134) and Nenad Zimonjic (1,073) to the match against Uzbekistan.

Petr Lebed, captain of Uzbekistan, called Denis Istomin (108), Farrukh Dustov (454), Murad Inoyatov (602) and Vaja Uzakov (909).

The match will be held at Belgrade Arena in Belgrade on 18 September - 20 September 2009.

This is a first Davis Cup meeting for Serbia and Uzbekistan.

This is Serbia’s 2nd year in the World Group and for the 2nd year it faces a Play-off to retain its status after falling to Spain in this year’s 1st round.

Uzbekistan has never competed in the World Group. This is the 5th time that it has qualified for the World Group Play-offs following victories over Korea, Rep. and Japan in Asia/Oceania Group I. It reached this stage of the competition for 4 successive years from 1998-2001 but has yet to win a live rubber in the Play-offs.
