Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Nokia, once a giant of the mobile industry, has officially ceased production of smartphones under its brand. This is confirmed by the removal of all Nokia smartphones and tablets from the website of HMD Global, the company that has held the license to produce devices under this legendary brand since 2017. This information was reported by the news portal inbusiness.kz.
Despite efforts by HMD Global to revive Nokia’s former glory in the smartphone market, competition with giants such as Apple and Samsung proved too strong. The lack of significant innovations and new flagship models in recent years pointed to the inevitability of this decision.
Nokia’s history in the mobile device market has been marked by both highs and lows. The company, which once dominated the world of mobile phones, faced significant challenges in the late 2000s with the rise of smartphones running iOS and Android. Its attempt to collaborate with Microsoft and release smartphones powered by Windows Phone also failed to achieve success. In 2016, HMD Global acquired the rights to the Nokia brand, sparking a wave of optimism among fans, but these hopes were not realized either.
In 2024, HMD Global announced a shift to a multi-brand strategy, focusing on its own developments. The cessation of Nokia smartphone production is a logical step within this strategy.
Although the era of Nokia smartphones has come to an end, the brand continues to exist in the feature phone segment. Nokia itself has successfully transformed, becoming a leader in network infrastructure and telecommunications, and is actively expanding into areas such as 5G, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. The company is also involved in ambitious projects, including the development of a cellular network for space.
