NGOs propose changes to mass media laws of Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan organized a seminar titled “Priority tasks of reforming information sphere, ensuring freedom of speech and information” on 25 March 2011.

The seminar was organized by the Committee on information and communication technologies of Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the Institute of Studying Civil Society and Kamolot Public Youth Movement.

The seminar was aimed at further strengthening theoretical knowledge and skills of youth on actual issues of reforming of information sector, ensuring speech and information freedom, as well as developing concrete proposals and recommendations to laws.

The participants familiarized with the goals and concepts of several initiatives of the Uzbek President Islam Karimov, including law “On openness of activity of the state bodies”, law “On broadcasting”, law “On introduction of changes and amendments to law “On telecommunications”, etc.

The seminar participants proposed concrete recommendations to draft laws, including necessity on determining procedures on informing publicity on activity of state bodies, creation of norms on developing competition in broadcasting, decreasing time for receiving of information by mass media, etc.

The participants noted that development of information sector, including modern ICT and Internet, create new basics for effective solving social-economic problems, and others.
