The new Uzbekistan coach is not expecting a cakewalk when the draw of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ takes place in Doha, Qatar, on April 23, 2010, and is bracing up to fulfill the expectations.
Uzbekistan lost to Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the tournament’s last edition in 2007 and Abramov’s predecessor Mirdjalal Kasimov has revamped the team since then.
“I know the expectations are big from my team to do better than the last edition,” the 47-year-old told the-afc.com.
“I am not expecting any surprises from the AFC Asian Cup draw because it’s difficult to find weak teams in the top Asian tournament.”
“All the 16 teams have an aim of winning the title and Uzbekistan is no different. We will go out and play only to win each match,” he added.
About recalling country’s leading marksman Maksim Shatskikh, who struts his stuff for Ukraine club Arsenal Kiev, defender Aleksey Nikolaev (Dynamo) and midfielder Islom Inomov (Nasaf), Abramov felt it was too early to decide on team formation.
“Of course these players are good and any coach would like to have them in his side but I would like to wait and watch before making any decision which will be based on the individual player’s performance,” he said.
The former Traktor and Locomotive coach was also happy with the talented pool of players including former AFC Player of the Year Bunyodkor’s Server Djeparov.
“There are many talented players in Uzbekistan including Djeparov. It’s a big responsibility on me and I will try to get the team its rightful place in the continent.”
