Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Today, on 8 May 2025, a new Pope has been elected in the Vatican. American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost became the 267th pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV. This is the first time a representative from the United States has ascended to the throne of Saint Peter.
The election of the new pontiff took place on the second day of the conclave, after the fourth round of voting. The successful conclusion of the election was signaled by the white smoke rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. The official announcement was made by Cardinal Protodeacon Domenico Mamberti from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, declaring the traditional phrase "Habemus Papam."
Robert Prevost was born in Chicago and has extensive experience in missionary work in Peru. Prior to his election, he served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and was appointed a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023. His reputation as a moderate reformer and advocate for inclusivity may influence the future direction of the Catholic Church.
The new Pope assumes office at a time when the Church faces several challenges, including internal ideological divisions, issues of sexual abuse, and global crises such as wars and climate change. Special attention will be given to strengthening unity within the Church, particularly in the United States, where political disagreements among bishops are prevalent.
Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on 21 April 2025, at the age of 88 after a prolonged illness. Francis, the first pontiff from Latin America, was known for his progressive stance on issues such as migration, LGBT+ inclusion, and climate change. His legacy and the cardinals he appointed had a significant impact on the election of the new Pope.
The election of Pope Leo XIV marked a historic moment for the Catholic Church and the world, opening a new chapter in its history.
