Nearly 3,000 micro-hydropower plants are being built in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In response to the growing demand for energy resources, a wide range of initiatives is being implemented annually in the country. As a result of these measures, electricity production has increased by 30% over the past five years, reaching 81.5 billion kilowatt-hours.

According to forecasts, electricity consumption in Uzbekistan will rise to 121 billion kilowatt-hours by 2035. In light of this, steps are already being taken to comprehensively develop the energy sector. By 2030, the share of renewable sources in total energy generation is expected to reach 54%.

Among the most promising areas are hydropower and nuclear energy.

In 2025–2026, the construction of 2,983 micro-hydropower plants with a total capacity of 167 megawatts is planned. These facilities will generate 500 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually and save 151 million cubic meters of natural gas. During the construction period, 1,200 people will be employed at the sites, and after commissioning, 520 permanent staff members will be needed.

The Minister of Energy reported on projects planned for implementation in 2025. This year, 1,185 micro-hydropower plants with a total capacity of 65 megawatts are expected to be commissioned, the majority of which will be built with the participation of the private sector.

The strategic direction also includes the development of nuclear energy. Work is underway on a project to create a small-capacity nuclear power plant. All stages—from design to commissioning—will be carried out under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), adhering to the best international standards and safety requirements.

The head of the "Uzatom" agency reported on the agreements reached, the progress of negotiations, and the current stage of project implementation.

As a result of the meeting, instructions were given to ensure the timely completion of construction works and to provide the population and the country's economy with additional volumes of electricity.
