National seminar discusses drug resistance infection and viruses
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- National seminar, dedicated to World Health Day, was held at Tashkent’s Poytaht Business Center. The event was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan. The seminar was devoted to combating drug resistance infections and viruses.

Dr Michel Tailhades, the head of the WHO Country Office in Uzbekistan, said the drug resistance became important problem of public healthcare and requires special attention. He said that annually 250,000 people are dying from drug resistance infections in the European Union.

He said that use of antibiotic in any purpose contributes to increased drug resistance and in the result it is impossible to treat diseases.

This is actual issue and drug resistance became topic of World Health Day in 2011, which is held under motto “Combat drug resistance: no action today means no cure tomorrow”. The WHO calls all society, medical works, prescribing drugs, pharmaceutical industry, producers of meat and dairy products ensure responsible relation to use of antibiotics and establish effective monitoring on antibiotics use and drug resistance, as well as develop new anti-bacterial medicaments.

The main topics of the seminar were raising awareness of various sector on drug resistance problem to national healthcare, informing participants of the WHO regional strategy on drug resistance, which will be adopted in September 2011, as well as food security, preventing and fighting drug resistance and others.
