Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The majority of Uzbek young people are against religious extremism and terrorism, the UzA Uzbek National News Agency reported on 29 December, quoting the results of a poll conducted by the Ijtimoiy Fikr public opinion centre.

The Ijtimoiy Fikr centre polled Uzbek young people to find out what are their "social positions and life priorities" as the year 2008 - Year of Young People - is ending, the report said.

"It should be noted that in their responses, Uzbek young people (97.7% of the respondents) demonstrated strong negative attitude towards religious extremism and terrorism," the report said.

The poll also found out that "the majority of the respondents (94.6%) agree with the view `There are many countries in the world, but our motherland - Uzbekistan - is the only and unique’... and the majority of Uzbek young people regard the history, culture, and traditions of the Uzbek nation as supreme values".

The report also said that the comparative analyses of the results of some polls showed that "the absolute majority (80.7%) of Uzbek young people believe in their future".

In general, social surveys show that Uzbek young people are "highly optimistic" and hail the opportunities created by the government, as well as presidential support for the young generation, the report said.
