Model United Nations conducted at School №50 in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Tashkent’s School №50 today conducted a Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, with the support of the United Nations Information Office (UNO). The delegates involved in the conference were from 8th and 9th grade classes.

MUN is a global program, conducted in schools, universities and colleges around the world at local, national and international levels, in which participating students fill the roles of national ambassadors and recreate the debates and discussions which take place in the General Assembly and other bodies of the United Nations.

This extremely popular program gives its participants an opportunity to learn about issues of global importance, while improving their research, negotiation and public speaking skills. It also gives its participants a greater understanding of the United Nation’s internal functions and procedures.

Each MUN conference, like the upcoming event at School №50, focuses on a particular topic of international concern. After being informed of their conference’s topic, each student delegate is designated a nation and must research their countries’ perspective on the matter at hand. The result of this research is a Position Paper, which each delegate reads at the beginning of their MUN conference.

During the conference itself the delegates voice their nation’s positions and negotiate a resolution which will address the matter at hand. It is vital that each delegate voices the perspective of their designated nation, rather than their own opinion.

The delegates of today’s MUN Conference represented a variety of members of the Security Council, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, South Africa, Germany, and Azerbaijan.

The United Nations Information Office considers MUN conferences to play an important role in educating students not only about the UN but also about matters of international concern.

A number of additional MUN conferences have been planned in Uzbekistan for 2012, including events at academic colleagues and lyceums in Tashkent and surrounding regions, a conference in Khorezm, Karakalpakstan, and events at the Westminster International University and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.
