Media: Prime Minister of India to visit the site of the collapse of the bridge in Gujarat

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will personally visit on Tuesday the site of a cable-stayed bridge collapse in the western Indian state of Gujarat, where more than 140 people died as a result of the tragedy. This was announced on Monday by the NDTV channel.

The head of the Indian government will also visit the victims in hospitals. Modi canceled a number of events scheduled for Monday with his participation. Gujarat, where the tragedy occurred, is the home state of the Indian prime minister, where he began his political career.

The Morbi suspension footbridge on the Machhu River in Gujarat state of India collapsed during the evening hours on Sunday. In total, about 500 people were on it at that moment. According to the latest data, 141 people died, most of them women and children. Rescued 177 people. The operation to search for people in the river is still ongoing.

The bridge was built over 100 years ago and was considered a historical monument. It was under reconstruction and opened to visitors only five days ago. Gujarat authorities reported that it was put into operation without a permit to operate.
