The statement said that abortion was the main method of contraception up to 1990. Annually over 6% of women in fertile age used this method to abort undesirable pregnancy. Currently, the abortion is not more contraception method in Uzbekistan, the ministry said.
The ministry underlined that currently the Uzbek population familiarized with various methods of prevention of undesirable pregnancy.
Health Ministry said that Uzbekistan provides contraception to population for free. The ministry added that 13% of women in fertility age used contraception in 1991 and their number reached to 67% at the end of 2009.
The statement added that use of contraception is almost equal in rural areas (69%) and urban areas (66%).
Uzbek ministry underlined that intrauterine spirals are the most spread method of preventing undesirable pregnancy, which is used by 61.9% of women in fertility age, and hormonal contraception (oral tablet and injection contraceptions) – 34%.
