Legislative Chamber holds seminar on fighting corruption
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Committee of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan on international affairs and inter-parliamentary ties, Committee on defence and security held a seminar “Actual normative0legal issues on execution of the law “On accession of Uzbekistan to Convention of the United Nations against corruption (New York, 31 October 2003)” in cooperation with the Prosecutor-General’s Office.

MPs of Legislative Chamber, representatives of the Prosecutor-General’s Office, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, and Tashkent State Law Institute participated at the event.

It was noted that Uzbekistan carries out gradual steps to ensure rule of law, protection of rights and interests of human, family, society and the state. One of such steps was adoption of the law “On accession of Uzbekistan to Convention of the United Nations against corruption (New York, 31 October 2003)” in 2008.

In line with this law, the Eurasian Group on fighting legalization of criminal income and financing terrorism and Istanbul action plan on fighting corruption. In order to implement universal norms of the UN Convention against corruption, Uzbekistan adopted several laws and other normative documents, as well as by-laws.

It was said that the Concept on further deepening democratic reforms and forming civil society in the country, offered by the Uzbek President Islam Karimov, has important significance in preventing corruption in Uzbekistan. In line with the concept, the country carries out active lawmaking work directed at improving legislative base on fighting corruption. In line with the concept, currently the country develops law “On openness of activity of the state bodies and governance”, law “On public control in Uzbekistan” and law “On social partnership”.

The active work is also underway on other directions on developing legislative base on combating corruption and improving law enforcement. In particular, Uzbekistan develops a national programme on further strengthening fight against corruption.

The participants made proposals directed at improving legal education, promoting legal knowledge among population, strengthening public and parliamentary control, etc.
