Legal bases of protecting intellectual property considered in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Committee of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis on science, education, culture and sport and the State Patent Agency organized a seminar “Legal protection of intellectual property”.

MPs of Legislative Chamber, specialists of the State Patent Agency, representative of the universities, inventors participated at the event.

The event was dedicated to International Intellectual Property Day and issued related to protecting intellectual property, which is regulated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Currently, WIPO unites 184 states.

The WIPO was established on 26 April 1970. In 2000, the WIPO countries decided to establish International Intellectual Property Day to raise contribution of inventors and authors to development of the society worldwide. From 2001, International Intellectual Property Day is marked worldwide on 26 April.

State Patent Agency of Uzbekistan was founded in 1992. The agency is member of WIPO. It also joined Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), Trademark Law Treaty, Patent Law Treaty (PLT), Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure, and others.

Currently, Uzbekistan signed 8 interstate, 10 intergovernmental and 17 inter-departmental agreements, which directed at protecting scientific-technical developments abroad and foreign economic activities of exporters, as well as directed at attracting foreign investments to national industry.

It was said that State Patent Agency of Uzbekistan received 5,840 applications for intellectual property objects, including 612 – inventions, 171 – useful model, 125 – industrial examples, 4,624 – trademarks, 297 software and databases and 11 – selective achievement.

State expertise of over 5,892 applications were conducted, of which 456 – inventions, 107 useful models, 112 – industrial samples, 4935 – trademarks, 274 – software and databases, 8 – selective achievements. The volume of expertise rose by 1.7% year-on-year in 2010.

In 2010, over 2,431 applications for intellectual property were transferred to state registration, of which 1,999 were registered, of which 463 are under consideration and they will be registered after payment of state duty.

In the reporting period, the agency registered 175 agreements on surrender of rights for intellectual property and license agreements. Number of registered agreements rose by 32.6% due to transfer of rights to trademarks.

During the seminar, the participants discussed issues related to legislation on protecting intellectual property and modern trends of its development, experience and perspectives of promotion in the market, etc.
