Uzbekistan 01/11/2007 Law-enforcement agencies holds meeting to step up fight against religious extremism

The coordination council of the law-enforcement agencies has held a session at the Prosecutor-General’s office. Officials from the Interior Ministry, State Customs Committee and the National Security Services attended it.

The session discussed the following issues: the legitimacy of resolutions on suspending a preliminary investigation into criminal cases; the state of implementing laws on preventing the illegal publication and distribution of materials promoting ideas of religious extremism and fundamentalism; the state of the fight against criminal groups, robberies and banditry as well as against the illegal recruitment of people for exploitation and human trafficking.

The session paid a special attention to causes and reasons behind crimes and violations of the law relating to publishing and distributing materials which promote ideas of religious extremism and fundamentalism. The meeting also noted a need for taking resolute measures on preventing those causes and reasons, strengthening control over this issue by the prosecutor’s office and its departments.

At the same time, specific requirements were set to ensure a punishment for the guilty. Furthermore, the session adopted relevant decisions on strengthening the control of the prosecutor’s office and its departments over increasing the efficiency of prompt investigations; detaining people on the wanted list and preventing the groundless suspension of a preliminary investigation.

The press service of the Prosecutor-General’s office said that the session paid a special attention to shortcomings in preventing human trafficking. Moreover, the session noted the lack of cooperation between the commission for minors’ issues, the Kamolot youth movement, the State Committee for Women, local governments and law and order. The session adopted relevant decisions on taking urgent measures on coordinating the activities of the relevant departments.

The session also noted failures in fighting criminal groups, robberies and banditry. The session worked out measures on improving prompt search operations on fighting the crime category, increasing the quality of inquiry and investigation and on ensuring a full reimbursement of the loss caused as a result of crimes.

Officials from prosecutor’s office and interior department presented their reports on the issues discussed.

During the session, the coordination council adopted decisions on eliminating shortcomings and increasing the efficiency of the activities in the aforementioned spheres.
