Uzbekistan 05/06/2009 Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan said to be back to normal border control routine
Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan went back to their ordinary routine of guarding their mutual border on Wednesday, after tightening border control on 26 May in reaction to acts of violence perpetrated by unidentified individuals in Khanabad and Andijan, Uzbek cities lying near the border, the Kyrgyz border guard said.

The two countries "have come to a decision to resume letting local people who live on the Kyrgyz and Uzbek sides [of the border] into the border territory of the neighboring state under earlier agreements," the border guard told Interfax on Wednesday.

"The current situation on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek state border is stable, and all problems arising at the border or in border areas are dealt with at the level of representatives of border guard units," it said.

At the same time, the Kyrgyz and Uzbek border guards keep interacting "in exchanging information, in joint operations against vehicles and persons engaging in contraband trade and illegal migrants, and to looking for persons who belong to extremist religious or terrorist organizations," the border guard said.
