Uzbekistan 11/06/2007 Kuwait keen to boost ties with Uzbekistan - foreign minister

Kuwait is keen on boosting its relations with Uzbekistan at the government and parliamentary levels, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shaykh Dr Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah on Thursday.

During a meeting with Speaker of Uzbekistan’s Legislature Chamber Erkin Khalilov, he hoped parliamentary relations between the two countries would be further boosted, Kuwait’s KUNA reported.

He underscored the interest of Kuwait’s National Assembly (parliament) in cooperating with parliaments of Muslim countries in general.

The Kuwaiti minister said Uzbekistan was the gateway between eastern and western Asia and was not only distinctive geographically, but also had deep-rooted Islamic history.

Shaykh Mohammad conveyed during the meeting greetings of His Highness the Amir Shaykh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Shaykh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Shaykh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, National Assembly Speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi, and the Kuwaiti people.

Moreover, he said His Highness the Amir would be visiting Uzbekistan following the month of Ramadan in response to the visit of Uzbek President Islom Karimov, adding that agreements would be signed with the aim of boosting bilateral relations.

On his part, the Uzbek speaker said there was much room for pushing forth relations between the two countries and hoped that Shaykh Mohammad’s visit to the country would also serve in this area.

The two sides discussed boosting bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister had met yesterday with President Islom Karimov. He also held talks yesterday with Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov and signed a memorandum of understand on coordination between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

Shaykh Mohammad, who is accompanied by Bahraini Foreign Minister Shaykh Khalid bin Ahmad Al-Khalifa, is on a tour that took him to South Korea where he participated in the 6th Asian Cooperation Dialogue Forum. He will be heading to Azerbaijan later today.
