Sports 12/10/2008 Knowledge is power for Lee
South Korea’s coach Lee Kwang-jong
Coach Lee Kwang-jong is confident Korea Republic’s inside knowledge of Uzbekistan will prove crucial in Sunday’s AFC U-16 Championship quarter-final.

Korea and Uzbekistan have met four times in friendly matches over the last month in Seoul and Tashkent with Lee’s side winning twice on home soil and sharing two draws following their arrival in the capital.

Korea won Group B ahead of Syria following impressive wins over India and Indonesia, but will have to deal with a passionate, vocal home support at Pakhtakor Stadium, which attracted over 10,000 for Uzbekistan’s opening day 7-0 demolition of Singapore.

“We know them well, but we will have to give them home advantage. But we are not putting too much emphasis on that and we are confident,” said Lee, who has a full squad as his disposal.

“We have learnt a lot about them. We know that they are very aggressive, they play with a lot of heart.”

Captain Rim Chang-woo is confident Korea can go on and win the tournament as he looks to extend his rare scoring streak, which has seen the centre-back find the back of the net in all three group games.

“This has never happened to me before, it is a new thing for me,” he said.

“But I am very fortunate to score goals because of the good work from my team-mates on the set-pieces as they worked out very well and I was in a good position to score.”

Uzbekistan coach Robert Gay will also look to his own knowledge of Korea to plot a route to the semi-finals and a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, an award which is available for all quarter-finals winners.

“We have watched videos of Korea’s games and we played Korea recently and we know them very well,” said the Russian coach.

“We have looked at their weaknesses and have been talking to the players about how to make the best out of their weaknesses.”

Gay, who has yet to decide who will take over the captain’s armband from suspended skipper and playmaker Akramjon Bahritdinov, has has warned his side against complacency in front of their own fans.

“We will have a lot of support, but the players will still have to listen to me - we know all of the quarter-finalists are strong,” he emphasised.

“It is going to be tight game. This game means a lot to us and it will mean a ticket to the World Cup.”
