Uzbekistan 02/09/2008 Karimov initiates transformation - The Korean Post
  • A program of independent development of the country and the constitution, meeting democratic demands and international criteria;
  • A new program of state and social construction, reform of administration, both central and locally, realization of principles harmonizing the interests of the state, society and individuals;
  • A new respected model of economic development based on five principles: de-ideologization of the economy, supremacy of law, gradual reform, state regulation over the transition period and a strong social policy;
  • Reform of the armed and border forces.


      Karimov has: a strong will, self-confidence and courage, defending the honor and dignity of the Uzbek people.

      When he headed the central committee of the Communist Party, others tried to tarnish his name, producing lawlessness and persecution; raised to the level of state policy respecting the spiritual values of Uzbekistan, renewal and development of the country’s sacred religion, traditions and customs, and the priceless heritage of the people;

      He also raised international respect for Uzbekistan; contributed to the formation of social awareness based on national ideology and the value of tradition; made a great contribution to establishing, preserving and strengthening peace and national accord in Uzbekistan.

      Under his leadership, the basis for national sovereignty and civil society has been created, as well as conditions for strengthening peace, priority for stable development and prosperity of a multi-ethnic Uzbekistan in the new century.

      1938 _ Born in Samarkand.

      1960 _ Enters agricultural engineering plant in Tashkent.

      1961-1966 _Works as a leading design engineer at the Chkalov Tashkent aviation production complex.

      1966-1983 _ Enters state planning committee of Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) as chief specialist, then promoted to vice chairman of planning committee.

      1983 _ Appointed finance minister of Uzbek SSR.

      1986 _ Appointed deputy prime minister, chairman of state planning committee of Uzbek SSR.

      1986-1989 _ Works as first secretary of Kashkadarya provincial party committee.

      June 1989 _ Elected first secretary of central committee of Uzbek Communist Party.

      1990 _ Elected president of Uzbek SSR.

      Aug. 31, 1991 _ Proclaims independence of Republic of Uzbekistan.

      Dec. 29, 1991 _ Elected president of Uzbekistan.

      March 26, 1995 _ Term extended to 2000 after national referendum.

      2000 _ Elected to another seven-year term after constitutional amendment.

      2007 _ Elected to another seven-year term.

      Married, with two daughters and four grandchildren. His wife, Tatyana Karimova, is an economist.

      Named ’’Hero of Uzbekistan" and received Orders of ’’Mustakillik" (Independence)’’ and ’’Amir Temur."
