Uzbekistan 22/05/2009 Journalists discuss gender equality

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A two-day training for journalists on “The role of mass media in promotion of women’s rights” organized by UNDP project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan” and the International Center for Journalists’ Retraining is held in Tashkent on 21-22 May 2009.

The main goals of the event are tackling problems and stereotypes in mass media, professional development of journalists and improvement of the quality of printed materials through applying methodology on gender-correct writing as well as raising the general public’s awareness on the Convention on elimination of all forms of discrimination against women (CEDAW).

The training agenda includes theory and practice on the issues of equality of rights, norms of national and international legislation. During the training, representatives of mass media will be able to enhance their knowledge on equal rights, non-discrimination of women. During practical exercises, journalists will obtain the skills of correct texts writing on the coverage of the issues in the different spheres of activities of their audience.

The UNDP project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan” is implemented in collaboration with the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan. The project is aimed at supporting and building capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness on and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) to Uzbekistan given in August 2006.

The CEDAW Convention adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly is an international document on the rights of women. Uzbekistan was one of the first Central Asian countries to ratify the convention in 1995. It has reported four times to the CEDAW Committee on its implementation.
