Uzbekistan 06/08/2008 Journalists discover holistic approach to Human Development


Journalists of print mass media such as "Uzbekistan Today", "Economic Review", teachers of pilot course on Human Development of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy alongside with representatives from internet sources such as www.uza.uz and www.zerkalo.uz attended this event, UNDP Uzbekistan said on its website.

The meeting addressed queries pertinent to conditions and criteria of the contest, selection of best submissions and awarding of the winners. This event was lead by "Introducing and Advancing the Potential of Educational Establishments for Teaching Human Development Approach" project of UNDP.

In the course of the meeting Ms. Elena Danilova – Cross, Human Development Coordinator, made a presentation entitled ’Measuring Human Development". Delivered information allowed participants to familiarize themselves with Human Development paradigm and its basic principles, human well-being evaluation criteria, definition of the quality of life, methods of calculating composite HD index - its variables and derivatives.

Analysis of socio-economic situation and trends of selected countries based on their socio-economic situation and human development indices were communicated within the frame of given presentation. Main purpose and objectives of Human Development report at global, regional and national levels was also well articulated.

Participants gained the opportunity to learn more about world income distribution, proportion of people living at different income levels, to familiarize with the concept of poverty and track dynamics of living standard in different countries and population of these countries living below poverty line. Besides, journalists have been demonstrated the system of simulating the projections the human development trends towards 2015. Chronological tables in the global and regional scale, displaying regional distribution of incomes, the level of health and education in each country were also shown.

Aziza Askarova, UNDP Communications and Outreach Specialist mentioned that this contest is dedicated to the 15th Anniversary of UNDP’s presence in Uzbekistan and offers an excellent opportunity for the journalists to select from a wide range of topics relevant to UNDP activities in Uzbekistan. She also gave detailed information about the contest and on behalf of UNDP management expressed readiness of heads of UNDP Units to present necessary information about UNDP in general, its mandate, activities in Uzbekistan, UNDP’s initiatives in three core areas: economic, democratic, environmental governance as well as any particular UNDP project as well as organize the interview with UNDP experts.

Meeting was followed by further discussion on human development concept and Answers & Questions session related to specifics of writing articles.
