Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Davron Mirzaev’s second minute penalty was enough as Uzbekistan edged out Jordan 1-0 in their AFC U-19 Championship Group D opener on Saturday.

Uzbekistan were awarded the spot kick 70 seconds into the contest when Jordan’s Yaser Rawashdeh was adjudged to have handled just inside the area, which allowed Mirzaev to net what proved to be the winner as both sides lacked penetration and failed to fire a meaningful effort on goal.

Uzbekistan qualified for the finals with a 100% record but were as bemused as Jordan with the decision from referee Hiroyoshi Takayama at the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Khobar as Rawashdeh controlled an innocuous through ball just inside his own area which bounced up to hit the defender.

Rawashdeh was booked for his protests before Mirzaev stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the centre of the goal, evading the dive of Jordan goalkeeper Emad Feras.

The sides cancelled each other out for much of the first half, with Jordan’s best hope of an equaliser coming when Yousef Al Thodan laid the ball off for Abdel Amer who shot straight at Uzbekistan goalkeeper Doniyorjon Usmonov from the edge of the area.

Feras then struggled to deal with Kenja Turaev’s low right-footed effort at the other end before gathering the ball at the second attempt.

Sherzodbek Karimov’s dipping left-foot shot went narrowly over the bar as Uzbekistan attempted to find a second before the break.

Captain Karimov hit a half-volley straight at Feras early in the second half as the clinical final ball continued to be absent for both sides, with passes and crosses misplaced and shots failing to trouble either goalkeeper.

Feras turned Mirzaev’s shot over the bar, while Jordan’s Ali Hamza twice failed to find the target at the other end.

Uzbekistan frantically scrambled away an inswinging corner from Al Thodan, with Hamza among those who could not quite grab the crucial touch as Jordan again failed to get a shot away.

Uzbekistan then seemed content to wind down the clock to make certain of the three points and follow up their 3-0 win over Jordan in qualification for the finals.
