Japan issues US$1.47m grants to Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Government of Japan issued grants for US$1.47 million within its no-string aid programme to grass-root projects.

Ambassador of Japan to Uzbekistan Yosihisa Kuroda signed grant contracts at the special ceremony in Tashkent.

The funds will be used to finance 14 projects in various regions of Uzbekistan and directed to development of education, medical services and agriculture sectors. The projects will be implemented within a year.

In particular, Japan issued grants to five secondary schools in Syrdarya, Samarkand, Ferghana regions and Tashkent city. Three boarding schools in Surkhandarya and Andijan region also received grants. The grants will be used to improve education conditions at these institutions.

Surkhandarya regional perinatal center and Republican Centers for people with disabilities of Karakalpakstan and Andijan region received grants to purchase medical equipment.

Japan also issued grants to three projects, directed at improving water channels, used in agriculture. The projects will be realized in Khorezm region, Tashkent region and Karakalpakstan.

The Government of Japan has been implementing the programme on no-string aid to grass-root projects since 1995 to improve social conditions and prosperity of people of Uzbekistan. The programme finances projects in education, healthcare, agriculture and other sectors. In last 17 years, some 313 projects for US$19 million were implemented.
