Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In an ancient ceremony, Japan's new emperor Naruhito formally ascended to the throne on 22 October.
While he officially began his rein in May, only now, through a series of rituals called the 'Sokui no Rei', is he enthroned.
He was clad in orange robes and a headdress only worn by emperors and stood alongside two of Japan's 'Three Sacred Treasures' an ancient sword and a jewel.
The new empress Masako- in her own throne - wore 12 layers of robes.
"I swear that I will act according to the constitution and fulfil my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people," emperor read.
