Japan allocates US$4m to Uzbekistan to equip customs points
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Government of Japan issued grant for 360 million yens (US$4 million) to Uzbekistan to help the country to equip customs points with X-ray equipment.

Ambassador of Japan to Uzbekistan Tsutomi Hiraoka and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan Elyor Ganiev inked exchange note.

The grant was issued within the programme of no-string aid of the Japan Government on anti-terrorism and security direction to implement project “On installation of X-ray equipment at customs points at borders of Uzbekistan with neighbouring states, Phase II”.

In March 2010, the Japan Government provided 467 million yens (about US$5.2 million) to the first phase of the project, which provide mobile X-rays to customs point Hairaton in Surkhandarya region, borders with Afghanistan, and custom point Oybek in Tashkent region, borders with Tajikistan.

The training on use of X-ray equipment and improving skills on equipment management was held within the project in order to prevent drug and weapon smuggling, and help to boost trade.

Within the second phase, the equipment for railway cargo will be issued and organized traiunings on use of equipment.
