Issues of control over social networks and respect for freedom of speech require serious discussion

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Social networks can contribute to the spread of false information, but excessive restrictions on their activities can violate the right to freedom of speech. This was announced at a briefing by a representative of the UN Office for Human Rights, answering a journalist’s question.

The United Nations has repeatedly called for serious attention to be paid to the role of social networks in spreading misinformation, inciting hostility and inciting violence. According to a spokeswoman for the Office of Rupert Colville, such actions undermine basic human rights.

He said that the Department welcomed the attempts of social networks to counter such phenomena. At the same time, they recognize that it is not so easy to solve these problems.

“The digital environment has become an integral part of our daily lives, and these issues deserve serious attention and effective responses,” said Rupert Colville.

A spokeswoman announced his intention to hold a press conference on the impact of digitalization on human rights.

A week ago, the UN launched the “Checked” campaign, which is designed to counter the stream of misinformation, rumors and hostility that flooded the social networks, and sometimes the pages of newspapers, and television screens.

Its goal is to contrast the lies and hostility with true, verified information about the COVID-19 pandemic. Campaign organizers appeal to residents of different countries to become "information volunteers." Their role will be to share with their loved ones, friends, neighbors verified, true information that will help them protect themselves from coronavirus infection.
