Injection drugs use drives HIV epidemics in Eastern Europe, Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Number of people, living with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, grew from 970,000 people in 2011 to 1.4 million people in 2011, A new World AIDS Day report by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) said.

Only in 2011, number of HIV infected people in the region rose from 130,000 to 140,000. Consumption of injection drugs is one of main factors for development of epidemics, the UN News Center said.

The report authors underlined that HIV treatment is in low level in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Only 25% of HIV infected people have access to necessary medicaments. Treatment level is higher than 60% only in two countries of the region – Georgia and Romania.

Experts underlined that consumption of injection drugs and sexual transmission are main factors, which help to development of HIV epidemics in the region.

The report said that over 15% of consumers of injection drugs with HIV leave in Belarus and Tajikistan, over 20% in Ukraine and over 50% in Estonia.

Almost in all countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, external donors finance at least 60% of programmes on HIV prevention among persons, consuming injection drugs. Only 15% of expenses on HIV prevention among persons, using injection drugs, are covered by internal state sources.
