Sports 27/06/2007 Ibragimov set for Chagaev battle

WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov will take on WBA title holder Ruslan Chagaev in a unification bout in Moscow in October. Ibragimov, 32, won the WBO belt with a unanimous decision over American Shannon Briggs in Atlantic City earlier this month.

Uzbekistan’s Chagaev beat defending champion Nikolai Valuev of Russia in Stuttgart, Germany, in April.

"When I became champion my goal was to unify the division," said Ibragimov.

"This fight would be the first step in the process."

It will be the second heavyweight title fight staged in the Russian capital in less than a year.

Russia’s Oleg Maskaev scored a unanimous decision over Ugandan challenger Peter Okhello to retain his WBC title at the Olympic arena last December.

Ibragimov’s victory gave the fighters from the former Soviet Union a full control of the heavyweight division, with Ukraine’s Vladimir Klitschko also holding the IBF belt.

Klitschko will defend his title against American Lamon Brewster on 7 July in Cologne, Germany.
