How agriculture to be prepared for climate change

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Presidential resolution "On Measures to Create a Climate-Resilient Agro-Ecosystem and Enhance the Resilience of Agricultural Producers to Climate-Related Risks" was adopted on 24 June 2024.

The Ministry of Agriculture has been designated as the responsible body for implementing activities to adapt the sector to climate change and mitigate its negative impacts, counteract drought and land degradation, preserve (restore) biodiversity of pastures, and develop and widely introduce new innovative technologies in the field of food security.

The document approves the National Program for the Adaptation of Agriculture to Climate Change and Mitigation of the Sector's Negative Impact on the Climate. Its priority areas are:

- Effective organization of measures undertaken in regions related to climate change;

- Conducting agricultural activities in the context of climate change within the framework of international grant projects;

- Effective exploitation of natural resources related to climate change, as well as the improvement of agrotechnologies for growing crops;

- Development of measures for adapting agriculture to climate change;

- Efficient use and protection of pastures.

The composition of the Interdepartmental Working Group for coordinating the implementation of the National Program has also been approved, with the following main tasks:

- Development and practical implementation of scientifically based proposals for adapting agriculture to climate change;

- Development of an early warning system for agricultural producers about the threat of emergencies (including abnormal temperature changes, mudflows and floods, hail, and drought), as well as threats from locusts and other pests;

- Implementation of agricultural adaptation projects to climate change through loans and grants from international financial institutions and the state budget, as well as establishing cooperation with foreign countries;

- Increasing the environmental awareness of farmers, agribusiness workers, and regular enhancement of their knowledge and skills in adapting the agricultural sector to climate change;

- Preparation of popular science and analytical materials to inform the general public about climate change in agriculture and its consequences, as well as measures to widely popularize research results in this area among agricultural producers.

The resolution also introduces amendments and additions to some presidential resolutions.
