Gess hopes upturn continues against Qadsia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Shurtan boss Edgar Gess hopes his side can carry the momentum of a recent upturn in form into the AFC Cup clash against Al Qadsia at Guzor Central Stadium and gain the upper hand in the battle to qualify from Group B.

Shurtan began their continental campaign with a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Wednesday's opponents in Kuwait and a poor run of domestic results followed, leading to speculation over Gess' long-term future with the Uzbek side.

However, they thrashed Al Saqr 7-2 before draws at home and away with Al Ittihad left them on five points and level with the Syrians but five behind group leaders Al Qadsia.

The situation has improved on the home front as well with a draw in Fergana against frontrunners Neftchi and a home win over Sogdiana Jizzah lifting Shurtan off the bottom of the table.

Last year's Uzbekistan cup finalists have also advanced to the last 16 of the 2011 edition with a 4-1 extra-time victory over Zarafshan. It all adds up to a more positive future, according to Gess.

“The fact that we have stopped losing is a good sign,” he said.

“However, I cannot say that I am completely satisfied with the way the team has been playing. We still have to progress and I expect the team to play better, so why not tomorrow?

“We need the victory over Al Qadsia not only to qualify from group stage but also for the players to regain confidence in their abilities.”

Shurtan, though, will be hampered by the absence of Timur Sultanov and Uros Milosavlevic with the duo ruled out of the contest through suspension.

“Of course, to start right away without two players, this is a serious loss,” added Gess.

“But at the same time, I am pleased about the return to fitness of our captain Igor Taran, who did not play against Al Ittihad due to injury. Igor has already managed to score two goals in an Uzbekistan Cup match.”

Al Qadsia boss Mohammed Ibrahim will be without Talal Al Amer and Saleh Al Hendy as they are also suspended.

Their absence, though, did not dampen Ibrahim's desire for the victory that would seal their place in the last 16.

“Despite losing two players, we have arrived in Uzbekistan for the victory,” he said.

“At first glance, we have secured a comfortable lead in the group but failure in the last two games could cost us our place in the next round.

“So the main problem for my players is not to lose concentration.”
