GEF supports Uzbekistan’s HCF elimination strategy
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Global Environment Fund approved a three year national strategy of Uzbekistan on eliminating consumption of hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCF).

Global Environment Fund adopted decision on approval of the projects within the strategy and allocated over US$1.2 million grant to their implementation on 30 August 2012.

National strategy will be implemented in 2013-2015. The strategy envisages implementation of the projects on training specialists in cooling sector, law enforcement bodies and customs officers, transfer to ozone friendly technologies and substances, preparing regional plan on eliminating ozone-destroying substances, stage-by-stage decreasing HCF consumption without damage to businesses.

Within the national programme on decreasing use of ozone-destroying substances, the industrial enterprises receive support on transfer to production of ozone-friendly goods, develop system on utilization of ozone-destroying substances and products and measures adopted to prevent their illegal turnover.

Implementation of the programme on eliminating of ozone-destroying substances, Uzbekistan stopped the use of 99.95% of ozone-destroying substances. This was achieved before the schedule, set by the Montreal Protocol.

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed on 16 September 1987 by 24 states. The document an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion. Uzbekistan joined the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol, as well as its amendments in 1993.
