Sports 22/10/2008 Galekovic set for second leg return
AFC Champions League
Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic is set to feature in Wednesday’s semi-final second leg against Uzbekistan’s Kuruvchi as the Australian side look to defend a 3-0 advantage at MHSK Stadium.

Galekovic kept a clean sheet two weeks ago as Diego, Fabian Barbiero and Cristiano netted at Hindmarsh Stadium to hand the Reds the initiative in the tie, but the Australia goalkeeper suffered a groin injury while on national team duty last week.

Although the injury was not as serious as initially feared, the 27-year-old missed Friday’s 1-0 win over Queensland Roar in the A-League as 17-year-old custodian Mark Birighitti made his Adelaide debut.

Galekovic, who has kept 12 clean sheets in the Reds’ last 20 matches in all competitions, did not train during the squad’s stopover in Singapore, but came through a light session on arrival in Tashkent to hand coach Aurelio Vidmar a welcome boost.

“He will train again on Tuesday after having a light session on Monday,” said Vidmar.

“We will give him until the last minute to be fit but he came through Monday’s session fine so I think he should be fine to play.”

Striker Paul Agostino, an unused substitute in the first leg triumph, will be unavailable after suffering a suspected calf injury during Adelaide’s training session in the Uzbekistan capital on Monday and will undergo an MRI scan to discover the extent of the problem.

“We think he has torn a calf muscle and early suggestions are that it could be anywhere between a four to six week injury,” said Vidmar.

“It hasn’t affected our preparations, however ’Ago’ is a player who would have had an impact in some capacity in a game like this and unfortunately now we don’t have that. It just gives someone else an opportunity.”

Adelaide have conceded only three goals in nine games during their run to the semi-final, but Vidmar is not getting carried away following the “flattering” first leg triumph.

“We are heading into the game confident as we had a good win last Friday against Queensland, but we know against Kuruvchi it will be an extremely difficult game,” he added.

“Kuruvchi coach Zico said last week football is football and anything can happen, but we are not afraid, we are coming in very confident.

"But we know we have to play at our best because they are a very good side.”
