Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 2 May 2019 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov, who arrived in Tashkent to hold bilateral talks and participate in the 11th meeting of the participating States Memorandum of Understanding on Regional Drug Control Cooperation.
During the conversation, the sides discussed issues of a bilateral and regional nature, and also exchanged views on topical international issues.
The ministers reviewed the agreements reached during the state visit to Uzbekistan in October 2018 of President Vladimir Putin and his talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. As noted, the parties are in control of a significant package of trade and economic agreements and investment contracts signed during the visit. Agreements are being consistently implemented in the areas of political-diplomatic, inter-parliamentary, cultural and humanitarian cooperation.
At present, the parties are preparing for the first meeting of the Joint Commission at the level of heads of government, at which it is supposed to consider priority areas for further expansion of trade and economic ties.
The meeting at the Foreign Ministry also discussed the opening of branches of four leading Russian universities in Uzbekistan - MEPI, VGIK, Moscow Power Engineering Institute and Russian University of Chemical Technology.
The heads of the foreign affairs agencies paid special attention to the interaction of Uzbekistan and Russia in the Afghan sector, including within the framework of international efforts to launch inter-Afghan peace talks and the socio-economic rehabilitation of Afghanistan.
The ministers also exchanged views on the prospects for strengthening security and cooperation in the region.
Russian Ambassador Vladimir Tyurdenev attended the meeting.
