FAO and Uzbekistan modernize land legislation to support sustainable agricultural development
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — As part of the cooperation between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the project “Support for the Revision of the Land Code” is currently being implemented.
Within the framework of the project, extensive discussions were held with the involvement of international experts, focusing on improving the legal framework governing land relations and promoting the rational use of land resources in Uzbekistan.
This technical initiative aims to modernize the country’s land resource management system by drawing on leading international practices, enhancing the legal mechanisms of land use, strengthening land rights protections, and fostering the creation of an efficient and transparent agricultural land market.
A team of FAO international experts held meetings with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemical Research, the State Scientific Design Institute “Uzdaverloyiha,” and the Committee for the Development of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry. In addition, the delegation conducted separate negotiations with representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Agency for Strategic Reforms under the President, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Justice, the Uzbekistan Farmers’ Council, and the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
Project coordinator Narimon Nishanov emphasized that this mission marks an important stage in the modernization of Uzbekistan’s agricultural land management system. According to him, the FAO experts’ recommendations not only help bring the national land legislation in line with international standards but also support the achievement of key national development goals.
The project places special emphasis on ensuring equality, transparency, and public engagement in line with international principles of responsible land governance. In this context, the experts studied agricultural land management practices in the Okaltyn and Sardoba districts of the Syrdarya region.
The recommendations developed on the basis of analysis and consultations will serve as a foundation for further improving Uzbekistan’s land legislation, strengthening the principles of sustainable land governance, and advancing the country’s broader economic development objectives.
