Explosion of old ammunition in Khorezm eegion: Investigation underway

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Authorities in Uzbekistan’s Khorezm region are investigating an incident involving the accidental detonation of an old artillery shell that had been handed over to a scrap metal collection point. One person was killed as a result of the explosion, which has been widely reported by Telegram channels and online news outlets.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan clarified that the shell was discovered and surrendered by local residents in an area outside the jurisdiction of the military.

The Ministry emphasized that such actions by civilians are strictly prohibited and violate safety regulations. It reiterated that any discovery of ammunition or explosive materials must be immediately reported to law enforcement authorities.

According to the statement, the type of shell involved is not part of the armament of the Armed Forces of Uzbekistan. Preliminary assessments suggest that the ordnance dates back to the 1970s. No military personnel were involved in the incident, nor are any currently subject to criminal investigation.

The Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan has launched an initial investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the explosion.

The Agency for Information and Mass Communications has issued a strong appeal to social media users, journalists, and online media outlets to refrain from spreading unverified or unofficial information. The agency reminded the public that disseminating false or misleading content can result in legal consequences.

Members of the press and the public are advised to seek official commentary and expert clarification from the authorized government agencies when reporting or discussing similar incidents.
