Evstafeev at ease as Aussies await
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan coach Aleksey Evstafeev appears at his most calm even when faced with the crucial task of guiding his team to the final of the 2010 AFC U-16 Championship in Tashkent, via the penultimate clash with Australia on Thursday at Pakhtakor Stadium.

The tournament hosts have been in impressive form so far, defeating Indonesia and Tajikistan in the group stage, 3-0 and 8-1 respectively, before edging Syria 2-1 to advance to the final four and book their place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

Five-goal forward Timur Khakimov leads the Uzbek strike force and is neck-and-neck with Japan’s Takumi Minamino while a partisan home crowd is anticipating they will be celebrating a title victory on Sunday.

Expectations can also work against a side, however, and more so for Uzbekistan as with their status as hosts they were pre-tournament favourites to go all the way.

But Evstafeev believes the hard work has been done and that pressure is not a problem for his side.

“I have always said that the main task for this tournament was qualification to the World Cup,” said the Uzbek coach.

“We achieved that in the previous round and now the important thing for tomorrow is that there is no pressure. We can play our best football.

“Mentally it will be easier and, as I said, the main goal has been achieved. And tomorrow we can show all our abilities. It should be a very good match as both teams want to win.”

Uzbekistan are also the team to have scored the most number of goals (13) but Evstafeev did not agree to suggestions his players would be tired given the hectic schedule of matches.

He added: “Our main task for yesterday was recovery from the quarter-final clash, and which is why we only had a light training session.

“Australia is a very well organised team so it will be a hard match. But I hope that with our supporters behind us, we can do our best to give more joy to them and to all the people of Uzbekistan.”

Star striker Khakimov, meanwhile, is keeping his feet on the ground despite his newfound publicity and the possibility of becoming the tournament’s top scorer.

“I’m not thinking about the (award) at the moment,” he said.

"If I am the top scorer, it will be good but the important thing is teamwork. If you play for the team, there will be chances to score.”
