The aim of the project is to decrease the mortality rate of babies and mothers. The first such project aimed at solving issues related to safe motherhood was implemented by UNICEF together with partners in [eastern] Fargona Region in 1999.

As part of the project, starting from this September, 13,400 health workers will undergo training in the next 30 months. Moreover, 148 national trainers and 456 senior health managers will attend special training courses to ensure the stable implementation of the project.

Newborn and child survival courses will be introduced into the academic curricula of medical institutes across the country. Eight new training centres be built, while six training centres will be reconstructed under the project.
