EU special envoy pays visit to Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation led by the Special Representative of European Union for Central Asia Pierre Morel paid a visit to Uzbekistan on 21 October, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan said in statement.

During the tour, the delegation visited Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. The sides considered current affairs and perspectives of development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union.

The sides noted necessity for effective use of potential of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union, first of all, in trade-economic and investment spheres.

The special attention was paid to issues of international and regional security of mutual interest. The sides discussed problems of establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan, situation in Kyrgyzstan in the context of recent parliamentary elections and tragic events in the country’s south in June 2010.

Morel said: “We highly rank position of Uzbekistan on situation in Kyrgyzstan and efforts of the Uzbek side on avoiding escalation of the situation in the region.”

Speaking about fair and rational use of water-energy resources in Central Asia, the EU envoy underlined importance of inspection of Rogun hydro power station by the World Bank.

During the talks, the sides exchanged opinion on combating terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and other transnational threats to security.

The Uzbek side positively rated interaction with the European Union on strengthening border and combating drug trafficking within BOMCA/CADAP programme, which became one of the effective initiates of the EU in the region.
